The social housing establishment is a policy the city government pays great attention to. Since 2017, the Taichung City Government has continued to promote "rent-only" social housing to meet the living needs of citizens and economically vulnerable families. The government rents at a discount of 30-50% of the market rent to reduce the living burden of citizens. As such, Taichung City could be more livable and attractive for young people to migrate to and work tirelessly.
After Mayor Lu took office, she set a policy goal of constructing 5,000 social housing units within four years (2019-2022). Today, the city government team has reached the target schedule for 2021 ahead, the commitment of 5,000 social housing. As of the end of 2022, the city government has completed seven social housing bases (1,490 households), and 14 social housing bases (4,481) are under construction. Also, it has budgeted and planned three bases, and the number of established households has increased to 7,362.
In the subsequent phase (2023-2026), Mayor Lu has directed the city government to further elevate its goal of establishing social housing for 10,000 households. Looking ahead, with an additional 8,000 units being built by the central government, the total number of social housing units provided by the government will reach approximately 18,000. This initiative aims to cater to the needs of more young and vulnerable families, encouraging them to settle down in Taichung.
