There are 32 urban planning areas in Taichung City, of which residential areas cover about 9899.7900 hectares, commercial areas cover about 996.8300 hectares, and industrial parks cover about 2592.7600 hectares. Land use must comply with the "Taichung Urban Planning Self-management Regulations," which contain relevant regulations regarding land use and zoning. The city's residential areas, commercial areas, and industrial parks are briefly described below:

A. Residential areas
Business entities that may affect the tranquility of residential areas are not allowed to set up or operate in such areas. These include shopping malls and any store covering a floor area of over 1,000 square meters, any eatery (i.e., a restaurant) covering a floor area of over 500 square meters, any theater, any movie house, any audiovisual singing site, any video program broadcasting site, any video-game field, any playground, any zoo, any mechanical playground, any karaoke house, any bowling alley, any golf course, any ballroom, any beer house, any bar or any other similar establishment.

B. Commercial areas
Commercial areas are set up to promote business development. In principle, business entities hazardous to public safety or the environment are prohibited.

C. Industrial parks
Industrial parks can be divided into category B industrial parks and category A industrial parks. Category B industrial parks are for factories that create slight public nuisance, production sites for facilities that prevent public nuisance, and factories that produce facilities for industrial development, public services and public utilities. Category A industrial parks are for light-industry and heavy-industry factories that do not pose a public danger.

D. Floor space index and building coverage ratio
The building coverage ratio and floor space index for any land-use zone must comply with the relevant provisions of the urban planning laws and regulations.
